Vogue 1395: Seagulls in Flight

Creating my own Sun and Sea with Vogue 1395, and a few Seagulls.  These seabirds have come to coexist with me in my fair land of sewing bliss.  No water here, or rocky perches on which to scout for food, but they are more than welcome to give me that since of outdoors, and ride on my back and shoulders as I move about.

These fair seagulls were perched atop an end bolt at Hancock fabrics, and was just what I needed to get me to my "happy place." It had been too cold and wet outside to wear, but just warm enough to lift my spirits inside while I worked on other "stuff".
What a lovely dress. I am happy just looking at the color and flow, that I might need to have a "Biance" fan when I wear this beauty. -- I can't believe it took me so long to make it.  As soon as I bought the pattern last summer, I set right out to make the pattern corrections and alterations:::

  • Cut Size 14
  • FBA of 1" (The size 16 would have been too big with a finished width of 42.5", so the 40.5" of the size 14 suited my ease requirements better.
  • Front length increase by 1.5" tapering back to 1.25 at side seam to meet the back.
  • Added 1.25" to skirt back only and matched the side seam curve with that of the front.
  • Lengthened the back by 1.25" and 
  • made similar adjustment on the back overlay, only in the "back" section of the pattern, tapering back to the tie front portion of the pattern.
  • added 1/2" at the waist to meet the new skirt back.
So, basically, it has really just been sitting prepped and ready for the right fabric to fly into my life. The fabric is just a polyester georgette with a really nice feel and flow, just light enough for the wings to blow in the wind and heavy enough to keep the skirt down.
The construction of this beauty was fairly straight forward and simple.  Although, it does require you to pay close attention to the back details and adding the overlay.  These details make the dress.   Without them, it would just be a "mu-mu" with elastic waist, not something I would wear in this millennium.  (Meh, well, hold that thought, maybe I would.)

Most of the time, fabric is the voice I listen to when deciding what to make next on my sewing list.  It always amazes me how most of you can look at a pattern and just know what fabric to use.  Kudos to the wardrobe planning gurus and stylist out there.
I don't know, but am I the only one who needs help not only planning my wardrobe, but also how to matchie-match fabric to pattern?

    Love it!!! I made this last summer and have been waiting for the right fabric to make it again. The adjustments are all just right; it fits you perfectly!

    Pretty color :-) I'm in the same boat as Nakisha. I'm waiting for summer so I can make it again... maybe 2 more times. It's such an easy pullover.

Sewing for and working with ladies trying to get patterns and clothes to fit their body has reminded me of my own insecurities that were present in my early years.  My studies have taught me that pattern companies and clothing manufactures must use standard measures based on norms they have found helpful as a basis for sizing sewing patterns and ready-to-wear clothing.   These sizing standards of measurements, I think, however, can form insecurities in us that may contribute to our obsessions regarding our body and cause use to feel "we" are abnormal.  While, in actuality, the sewing patterns in this case just don't "fit" us.   When I was younger, I thought that as long as I was fitting into the size 10 pattern as it was drafted with no knowledge of FBA's, Sway back, prominent buttock adjustments and the like, then I was "normal" and of good weight and build, and therefore, acceptable.  I fitted into the "CHART" used by the patter

Project Chronicles: Butterick 6680- My everyday Dress look....

Good afternoon Sew-Fitters, I'm happy to finally share this look with you.  By finally, I mean, sit down and type this post.  As it seems, for some reason, I am more inclined lately to share on my blog.  I feel warm and fuzzy on my blog, with less of the need to keep to a few finely curated words, #hashtag-s or sentences. Here, I can just type uninhibited by limitations.  That sorta breaks the flow.  Do you feel that way sometimes?  Moving on....  This look is one I sewed as part of my wardrobe plans from more than a year ago.  Having a nice guiding principle, my own taste, is a good way to determine what to make, and know that whatever it is, will fit my lifestyle.   I prefer the Boho and Urban chic look.  A little sporty with a whole lot of sassy.  I suppose we all are continually improving our wardrobes for the lifestyle we live.  However, for me at this time, I love wearing dresses or sporty looks, even if it is with a pair of white chucks or flats.  My secret sauce is a good c

Sew-Along Part 2: Mini Wardrobe Series- Butterick 6600- Fitting the pattern, cutting and sewing a T-Shirt or Dress

Happy Saturday Sew-Fitters, OMG, I am in love with this T-Shirt. My plans really were only to make this pattern for the sewAlong , since I normally use my own sloper/block to create my t-shirts and such. But every pattern has a little something, something to make you feel special. I guess there is always a treat. This pattern, has that oversized 1" v-neck collar band. A little tricky to get right at first, but once you master that front v-neck, you will be happy you took the time to work it out. I used a double top-stitch, on the cover stitch machine and I even managed to turn the corner. I'm still working on that clean finish technique. It's almost like using a double needle to top-stitch, which was a feat in itself. Not all perfect, but remember, I'll never reach my perfection, it's too flawed in and of itself.
